Congress Designates Sudden Cardiac Awareness Month

Congress passed concurrent resolutions designating October as Sudden Cardiac Awareness Month in late September, 2008. Communications activities will be implemented in an effort to educate the general public about the risk of SCA, improve the public's ability to identify warning signs, encourage individuals to seek medical attention in a timely manner and promote the need for further research into the causes of this leading killer.

2008 Consumer Survey

The Heart Rhythm Society, Coalition co-chair at the time, conducted a new consumer survey in Fall 2008 that found 4 out of 5 Americans underestimate the severity of SCA. These survey findings were released as part of SCA Awareness Month and will serve as the basis for a consumer media relations effort. Visit the Heart Rhythm Society website for more on this survey.

National Public Survey

A February 2007 national public survey shows that a critical mass of Americans are concerned about the threat of SCA to their families, the lack of awareness of warning signs, risk factors, treatment options, and the need for more research on Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
